Local Involvement

For a long time people have misunderstood church as a building. When we say church, we mean a community of people who follow Jesus within the larger community. As Jesus followers, we believe it's important to bring transformation by loving and serving the surrounding community. That's what Circles of Influence is all about.

We have different projects including the backpack food program and a community garden.

Bruised Reed

In 2005, three women discovered they shared a desire to bring a light to some of Lexington's darkest places by reaching out to women who work in local strip clubs. After much prayer, they felt their plan was simple: take food and gifts to exotic dancers who, like the woman at the well, are frequently ignored, humiliated and belittled.

Inspired by Christ, and the way He often met the physical need before the spiritual need, the three women began taking meals twice a month to one small club, and they were amazed at how quickly they were accepted by the employees. Now they deliver hot, home-cooked meals to five clubs, ministering to about 175 people every week. Bruised Reed took its name from Matthew 12:20 (NIV): A bruised reed He will not break, and a smoldering wick He will not snuff out, till He leads justice to victory. The goal of the ministry is for the women working in these clubs to know we care and can provide a safe place for them to come with their questions and problems.

Contact Jani if you're interested in getting involved in meal delivery. Men can also get involved by providing security for our women.

Helping Through HIM

I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!

Jesus said that if we do something as small as giving a thirsty man a cup of water, we were doing it to him. Helping Through HIM works out of the truth, and seeks to show people the same value and dignity we would want to show Jesus if he was living in the flesh amongst us today. By building relationships with those in need and serving them with material items and/or service, we hope to connect them to Christ and to help them grow in full devotion to Him. Helping Through HIM is a service-oriented ministry that strives to holistically serve members and active attenders who are in need, disabled, or victims of disasters.

This ministry is based on your donated items that are received daily. To donate items, bring them to Building M (by the baseball fields) of our Harrodsburg Road Campus any day from 8am to 8pm.

When making a donation, keep in mind that we want to show people they're valued and restore their dignity, meaning - if you give people you're garbage, they'll probably feel like you view them as garbage. A good rule of thumb is this: if you wouldn't give the item away to your best friend, don't donate it to Helping Through HIM.

Assistance from Helping Through HIM is by appointment only. Contact Charlie to make an appointment.

The Refuge Medical Clinic

A couple of years ago, Southland's leaders had a dream to help care for the people in our community who do not have health insurance. That dream is now being realized through the Refuge Ministries Medical Clinics, which will offer primary care, dental care, pharmaceuticals, and other basic medical care.

To learn more, visit the Refuge Ministries website.

Sports

We believe sports are an excellent tool that the church can use to be a loving presence in our community. In recent months, we have been taking a look at our Sports Outreach Ministry and determining how we can be most effective at reaching people through sports

As a part of the Local Outreach Team, our two main objectives while playing sports are to:

  • Create Holistic Followers of Jesus
  • Love and Serve the Community

With these things in mind, we are looking for people who have a passion for sports that would love to be leaders in this ministry. Leaders in the Sports Ministry will have, as their main responsibility, the discipling of their team members and leading them to become holistic followers of Jesus. It will also be the responsibility of our leaders to foster Biblical community on their teams and lead their teams to serve the community.

If you are looking for a place to serve our community with people who have a similar passion for sports, then the Sports Outreach Ministry is the place for you. If you are interested in being a leader in the sports ministry, contact Jeff.

The most recent information about current sports leagues can be found in this blog entry.

World Equestrian Games

It's getting close to the World Equestrian Games being right in your back yard... or front yard. I'm not sure exactly where you live. As the community revs up for some major international hosting, we thought we'd take an opportunity to let you know they're in need of volunteers. We think it would be a great way for you to meet up with other people who value volunteering and serving like we do. There's lots of ways to build relationships and lots of needs that could be met. If you're interested in serving at the WEG's (It's fun to say that out loud... "WEG." Come on. Try it.) just visit their volunteer page of the website. It would be great to see you out there serving.

Pike County

It seems the news has made us all very aware of some of the devastation seen by our neighbors in Pike County. We've heard stories of a young guy who is organizing an effort to get residents clean water. Another story came through of a lady gathering clothes to delivery with a message of, "Jesus loves you. We're so sorry."

There are endless possibilities of what anyone could do in this time of need. We just wanted to take a minute and challenge you. Is there something you could do? Self directed ministry is what Jesus was all about. We should be about it, too. If you're looking for some help from friends, feel free to post something on MySouthland or check out Christian Appalachian Project to see their needs.

Outside Our Walls

Here's a good story showing us why we should sometimes (if not all of the time) venture beyond our campus and get out into the community.

Over the last few years, our family has been “on mission” with the baseball team in our community.  We have had an amazing journey building relationships with people in our county and doing life together with them.

Last weekend, one of the coaches asked my husband to pray before their first game.  Then, as I drove up to the field, I saw my husband kneeling at the 3rd base line with 12 little boys, hats off, kneeling beside my husband…praying.  The coaches were standing behind them with their hats off as well.  It was an amazing sight!

Earlier in the day, my husband, took notice that one of our coaches was having some back trouble during the game.  My husband went up to him and asked if he could pray for his back.  The coach said, “Sure.”

At the last inning of the game, the coach had asked us to pray, because we were losing.  Well, the game ended and we lost.

As I was driving away, the coach waved me down so I would stop the car.  I rolled down my window and he asked where my husband was.  I said, “He is already heading home.” The coach said excitedly, “You have to tell him this, my back did not hurt the entire game.  I don’t know what happened, but that is the first game I pitched that my back didn’t hurt.”  He said, “Your prayer didn’t work because we lost the game (in a teasing way).”

I said, “Maybe God wanted you to have the win, instead of the team.”  He said, “Maybe so.”
