In the Greek New Testament it is only one word (tetelestai), but the word is packed with meaning.  It was the last word uttered by Jesus from the cross. These are some of the ways secular writers used the word in and around the time of Jesus.

  1. One wrote of a task which was accomplished.
  2. Another, of a dangerous feat that was performed.
  3. A plan was put into effect.
  4. Someone’s will was carried out.
  5. A promise was fulfilled.
  6. Orders to a soldier were executed.
  7. An oath was made effective.
  8. A legal document was formally executed.
  9. A prayer was brought to pass.
  10. A given time period came to an end.
  11. A sickness reached its end.
  12. A debt was paid. (In fact, as the papyrus scraps of ancient legal documents were studied, the word “tetelestai” was repeatedly found at the top of receipts or bills of sale.  It was the everyday way of saying “Paid in full.”

Each of these uses can be applied to what Jesus did on the cross.  He obediently carried out His father’s will, putting into effect the plan of salvation.  The time of the Old Testament reached its end, and the New Covenant became effective.  Most of all, the legal debt we had incurred by our sins was paid in full. Take a pen and write the word “tetelestai” on the palm of your hand to remind yourself throughout the day that you are forgiven!

Board Games

Monopoly, Clue, Life, Battleship, and Sorry were the games of choice when I was a kid. I can remember playing Monopoly long into the night with family and friends. Instead of watching a ton of television this week, take a trip to Marvin Gardens. Put the remote control in the drawer, get some friends together, set some finger foods on the kitchen counter (highly recommend the new vanilla flavored oreos!!!), and talk some smack as you put one hotel after another on Park Place! Does anyone remember UNO? Or have you ever played Scattegories or Taboo or Catch Phrase? Pick a game and spend an evening talking and laughing!!! And after you put the kids to bed...grab a few blankets, make some hot chocolate and hang out on the back patio!

Ted Talk

I’ve attached a fun “Ted Talk” for your enjoyment. One of the ways we battle sin is to “think”. The Bible challenges us to “think” about things above. We live in a culture that rarely “thinks”. It has become a lost discipline. I don’t want that to be said of us. Ms. Gilbert is not a Christian from what I can gather, but she is “thinking”! Watch this video and you might have something fun to “think” about by dinner and something fun to talk about with your friends! If it bores you to death…I apologize ahead of time!!! Think, think, think…

Hey, thanks for taking this challenge seriously. With God’s help, you can do this! I hope it changes your week and your life! If you missed the challenge, you can watch the entire message here.

1. Pray

Our 7 Day Prayer

“Abba Father, I praise you for your goodness and your grace. I praise you for your creation and the beauty of it. I praise you for the life you’ve given me. Your compassion and love instill joy and confidence in my life. Father, forgive me for continually rejecting and running away from the life that you created me for. Look past my sins and cover my stains. Remove the guilt that marks my life and the shame that robs my sleep. I have run from your truth for far too long; I’m at my wit’s end, there is no rope left, this life I’m living isn’t working, so I’m running to you. God, no matter what it takes, bring brokenness in my life. Open my eyes to how utterly hopeless I am without you. Teach me to hate sin. Teach me humility. In your great grace, would you unravel and ruin me, dismantle and devastate me; pull down every pillar of my faithless life until I wholly depend upon you. Surround me with your mercy, overwhelm me with your grace, cover me with your love, and drench my life in the words of your truth. Pour out your Spirit, your empowering presence, upon my life and teach me the joy of full surrender. God, take me ever deeper into your heart, show me the Jesus way of life, and may the light of his life be the light that shines through me—from the inside out. Amen!”

Prayer Walk

Pick a 15 minute window of time each day to go for a walk. On the walk, do not ask God for anything. Simply thank him for what he has already given you! After your walk remember Cody and Jemima's example, and how joy isn't dependent on your circumstances.

3. Meditate

Read the book God is Closer Than You Think by John Ortberg. Get it on Amazon.com

Verse to memorize:

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.” (II Timothy 1:7 NIV)

And for those who dare to memorize two verses in the same week:

“The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (II Timothy 4:18 NIV)

God is able….

I lost a good friend yesterday to a sudden and very unexpected death. My heart has been heavy for her husband and sister, both of whom are close friends. So this morning, I went to my source of help and hope which is the Bible and I read and prayed through these verses which remind us that God is able…

II Timothy 1:12

“God is able to keep that which I have committed to Him until that day.”

Ephesians 3:20

“God is able to do super-abundantly above all that we ask or think.”

Jude 24

“God is able to keep you from falling and present you blameless before His throne with exceeding joy.”

II Corinthians 9:8

“God is able to give you all the money you need and extra for every Christian enterprise.”

Philippians 3:21

“God is able to change this lowly body to be like his glorious body by the power He uses to subject all things to Himself.”

Romans 14:4

“God is able to make His servant stand so His servant will stand for Him.”

Romans 16:25

“God is able to make you stand firm in your faith according to the Gospel.”

Hebrews 7:25

“God is able to save to the uttermost those who come to Him through Christ, because He always lives to intercede for them.”

Whatever you are facing in this life, God is more than able and willing to help!

Dirty Laundry

I promised I would pray for you and I have been. I spent yesterday asking God to continue to give you courage as you confess your sin, as you air your dirty laundry to him. Remember David’s cry for help? “God soak me in your laundry and I’ll come out clean, scrub me and I’ll have a snow white life. Tune me in to foot tapping songs, set these once broken bones to dancing again!” (Psalm 51 MSG) As we learned this weekend, “There is no healing in hiding.” So go to www.clotheslineconfessions.com and make your secret known! The risk is worth the reward! Secret sin and inner peace cannot coexist! Your failure is not fatal—Your failure is forgiven! The sin you want to conceal the most is the sin you need to reveal the most!

I’ve spent today praying over a Biblical plan that I believe will help each of us experience the freedom over sin Jesus died to give us. Part of the plan involves worship…living in the truth of the songs we sing. In preparation for our weekend experience and encounter with Jesus—which you won’t want to miss—make an effort to listen to and learn this song and prepare yourself to express it in our community of believers by reading/memorizing Hebrews 9:28 which says, “So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.” I love you and I can’t wait to sing this song with you!

AMAZING!

I'm enjoying my day off...watching ESPN highlights from all the football games yesterday...playing legos with Silas...mow the grass one last time...going to a UK game tonight with Allison! But I can't shake the thought of, "Wow! What a weekend we just experienced together!!!" 1,056,024 meals packed!!! You all never cease to amaze me with your generosity and love for others! Just think about all the children and families around the world that will receive a meal you packed! Just think about all the hope you've given to people who had given up on living another day! Just think about all the smiles you created by giving 2 hours of your time! Just think about how thrilled Jesus is because of your compassion! 1,056,024 meals!!!

Remember what we studied yesterday...Statement...Sign...Seal...Spirit...Surrender...Sacrifice...Serve...Satisfaction! Who are you going to serve today? With the same level of energy, excitment and enthusiasm as we packed those meals with...who are you going to love today? Pick up the phone and call someone...drop a note of encouragement in the mail...send a quick text message...rake leaves...pay for someone's dinner...make some chilli for someone...babysit...run errands...get home from work early...turn off the TV and have a conversation...enjoy some hot chocolate with a friend...surprise someone by serving them! I'm praying for you!

1,056,024 meals...I still can't get over it!!!
