The second year of the Southland Community Garden season has come to a close. A volunteer plowed the soil and we planted a Fall/Winter cover crop of winter wheat. In the Spring the cover crop will be plowed under to provide nourishment for the soil. The tools, equipment, and hoses are stored away for the winter. Our garden shed is clean and organized with a new floor.
This year the garden size was doubled and we harvested and donated 4,670 pounds of vegetables! The primary recipients were Serve The City ministry, Hope Center for Women, and Hope Center for Men. There were 18 different crops harvested with tomatoes, corn and potatoes being the largest producing crops. We were truly blessed with good weather and committed leaders and volunteers.
The Garden Team is already starting to plan for next year. Plans are being discussed to teach gardening to homeowners in the neighborhoods Southland is serving and to help them grow their own food. In order to improve on this year and expand our influence we need more leaders and volunteers.
If you would like to join our leader team, it's never too early to contact Craig Schuster at (859) 396-6719 or schumaan@aol.com or Karen if you're wanting to serve in any of these capacities.
