What famous person to do people tell you that you look like?
Actress Mimi Rogers.
What's on your iPod right now?
Still trying to figure out what an iPod is, LOL!
Your first job?
Aside from babysitting and farmwork in junior high and high school, I worked in fast food at Burger Queen in Flemingsburg, KY when I was 18.
Your greatest indulgence?
Splurging maybe once a year on my hair.
What's your favorite TV series?
Don't really watch TV, except for sports, but last season my nephew and I had a weekly date to watch American Idol.
Favorite season, and why?
Summer — I love warm weather, sunshine, the beach, the long days, not being hindered by piling on layers of sweaters and coats.
What's one book that has impacted you?
Aside from the Bible, of course, it would have to be God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew. I read it during a season of unemployment when I had turned down a job promotion and transfer, believing God wanted me to go another direction besides climbing the corporate ladder. The book spoke to me profoundly about dependence on God and trusting Him for provision during a time when I was also living it out and seeing Him provide in miraculous ways.
Most recent purchase?
I splurged on my hair
When did you first come to Southland?
I came to see the Living Christmas Tree, probably in 1985. I don't remember if I bought the tickets or if they were given to me, and I don't even remember who I came with! I lived away from Kentucky from 1987-2009, but began visiting Southland sometimes when I was in town.
What's one thing people don't know about you?
That I'm not serious and focused on work ALL the time!!!
What was your childhood ambition?
To travel across the country on a motorcycle — ha! I don't even like riding motorcycles now!
What's something God's been teaching you lately you didn't know before?
He has been showing me personally how my previous experiences and challenges have prepared me for where He has me now.
What is your definition of a retreat?
Staying in a beach house with a couple of good friends, reading a good book, and eating some good seafood.
What brought you to Southland?
I had visited here at times when I lived in Florida and Texas, and every time I came the message spoke directly to my heart and my needs at that moment. So, it was only natural for me to begin attending here when I moved back to Kentucky.
What kept you here?
The heart of the leadership to reach the poor and needy of the city.
Your most memorable experience?
Being in Houston when the levees broke in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. Within 48 hours, our city had grown by 250,000 people who came into town as refugees, the majority of them arriving with nothing except the clothes on their backs. Our ministry was one of the leading care providers in the city, processing assistance for 20,000 individuals in the first three weeks alone. I'll never forget the faces of desperation, the glimpses of hope, and the small acts of gratitude for the precious souls we were privileged to serve. We saw God miraculously provide what we needed to meet the needs, and we saw the Church of Houston truly come together as a body—crossing racial, social, denominational and economic lines—to accomplish a monumental task.
What inspires you?
Testimonies of ordinary people who have stepped out in faith to reach the lost, and how He has moved in extraordinary ways on their behalf.
Your favorite snack?
Snickers candy bar.
If you could vacation anywhere... where would you go?
Back to Maui — I got to go for four days as a babysitter for my baby niece while my sister and brother-in-law participated in a wedding there. Four days was not enough!
What's your biggest challenge?
On December 24, 2009, I became guardian of my niece's three children who had been in foster care. My biggest challenge is knowing when and how to discipline and correct, and how to continually be an example of Jesus to them even when life in the "single mom" role gets overwhelming!
Who's lives in your house?
I live with a beautiful, intelligent, artistically gifted teen-ager, Alesha; a bright, caring, creative pre-teen, Jimmy; and a curious, active, energetic toddler, Chloe.
