Volunteer Spotlight: Jackie Davis

Jackie Davis is one of our 608 production volunteers. She started volunteering on the weekend Production team in June of 2009 and switched to 608 in June of 2011. Jackie has a servant’s heart and is a great volunteer. I love getting to serve with her at 608.

I asked her a few questions to get to know her a little better. Here are the questions and her answers.

Mr. Potato Head

This weekend, Jon said that we could easily compare the Body of Christ to Mr. Potato Head. That’s logical, right? He has ears, eyes and a nose all working together to complete him. Christ’s Church, his Body, must also have it’s ears, eyes, nose, legs and hands all working together to accomplish it’s task.

1 Corinthians 12:7 says that A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. Whether you know it or not, YOU (yes, you!) have a gift that is unique. You have something to offer the Body of Christ that no one else can.

Maybe you’re not exactly sure what you have to offer. Or maybe, you know exactly what your gifting is and want to get started operating in your sweet spot. Either way, we would love to get you connected with an area of opportunity here at church that would help you use and develop your gift for Christ.

If you’re ready to step out and start using your spiritual gifts, contact Jani.

And if you’re around on the weekend and want to get a customized plan for using your you-niqueness, we’d love to chat with you at Welcome to Southland.

Pond Baptisms 2012

As I begin to read the Sermon on the Mount, I’m immediately reminded that the poor in spirit are blessed. These people who are poor in spirit are those who realize their need for God. At Southland we want to generously extend hope to the poor. And for people who realize they need God, the hope we have to offer is a relationship with Jesus.

We get the chance to be a friend who can help process what God is doing in their life and show them the next step. We have the opportunity, when someone realizes they need God, to faithfully lead people toward giving their life to Christ. On Easter Sunday this year, it was exciting to witness dozens of people who had lived out this opportunity of leading a friend to Christ - who had stepped up to the challenge of baptizing at least one friend each year.

This year we witnessed 315 people baptized in the pond. What would happen if each of us committed to pray for our lost friends over the next year and responded to God’s leading when He opens the door for us to tell them about Jesus? It makes my heart beat fast to imagine it: Baptisms stretching from morning to evening next Easter Sunday. Not dozens, but thousands of Southland members leading a friend into the water. And not hundreds, but thousands of people taking the plunge and giving their lives to Christ.

Would you begin to cultivate the habit of praying that…

  1. God would bring lost people into your path.
  2. God would move in the hearts of people around you.
  3. God would give you eyes to see His movement and wisdom to know how to respond.
  4. God to allow you the privilege of baptizing at least one friend in the coming year.

Welcome to Southland

At Southland our desire is to help you create a customized plan for connection. Welcome to Southland is an interactive, conversational experience designed to help us get to know you and your connection needs. We’ll share more about our mission and help you discover how you might uniquely connect with God and others at Southland. In this comfortable environment, we’ll also talk about Southland’s mission and how it is expressed in our lives, as well as opportunities for you to get involved in living out the mission.

Welcome to Southland will help you connect to the step you’re seeking, with numerous opportunities including classes, service opportunities, Life Groups, and more. Welcome to Southland is also a great place to talk with us about connecting with Christ, find answers to your questions about baptism, and discover what it means to partner with Southland in membership.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions or want to know more about Welcome to Southland.

Peace, Be Still

Maybe you need a little more after hearing “Peace, be still,” this weekend. When everything is unraveling around you it’s easy to get caught up in the situation. The first thing that generally suffers is relationship. When everything is falling apart it’s hard to focus on our family and friends, and especially our relationship with God.

We want to relentlessly pursue a transforming relationship with God so that when troubles do come, we can stop and remember Jesus’ words, “Peace, be still.” A great way to pursue relationship with God is by reading his own words in the Bible and a reading plan can help you with that.

If you want to continue learning about how not to worry and what God says about worry, try this reading plan from YouVersion.com.

Pond Baptisms 2012

Baptisms in the Pond

It’s a lot warmer this time of year than it was last year. We’re fast approaching baptisms in the pond with temperatures reaching 30 degrees above normal. What we’re really trying to say is that the water is getting warm and it will be a great time of year to take the plunge.

Make the choice to follow Jesus in baptism and continue releasing a revolution of love in our community. Contact Sarah for the Harrodsburg Road campus or Brian for the Danville Campus to register. Even if you’re not planning on being baptized, come out and join us. Bring a chair, some snacks, and help us celebrate the many people that will be making a decision to take a plunge into their relationship with Jesus!

Baptisms will begin at 3 pm at both the Harrodsburg Road campus and Millennium Park pond in Danville. There will also be baptisms post 608 at Harrodsburg Road starting at 7:30pm. See you there!

2012 Easter Weekend

I know it may be hard to believe, especially when you consider the fact that it will be 80 degrees outside today, but Easter is right around the corner.

First of all, if you’ve never been to Southland on an Easter weekend, come out and join us! Whether you’ll be sporting your best Sunday attire or prefer to come in jeans and a tuxedo t-shirt, you’re welcome to come out and worship with us this Easter.

Remember that Easter offers a great opportunity to invite people to come out and worship with you! Invite your friends, family, neighbors, dentist, personal trainer, dog groomer, and even that co-worker you always say “hi” to at the office.

Ok. Now down to the details.

Easter comes early this year (April 8, to be precise), so you still have a couple weeks to make plans and adjust for the changes in service times. Just as in year’s past, we’ve added a few services and shifted some times to make room for all the new people and visitors that will be joining us on Easter weekend.

2012 Easter Service Times

Danville

  • 5:30pm, Saturday April 7
  • 9:30am & 11am, Sunday April 8

Harrodsburg Road Building E

  • 7pm, Friday April 6
  • 5:30pm, Saturday April 7
  • 8:30am, 10am, 11:30am & 608, Sunday April 8

Harrodsburg Road Building B

  • 5:40pm, Saturday April 7
  • 10:10am & 11:40am, Sunday April 8

Childcare is available for ages birth through 5th grade for all services. Childcare for 608 (birth through 5th grade) will be in the 0-23months Nursery.

As you’re looking at service times and trying to decide which one to attend, remember that regardless of which one you come to, you should try to come out 15-20 minutes early. Also, if you’re a regular here at Southland, consider attending one of the Friday or Saturday evening services. Maybe even use this as a chance to try a different venue such as Building B (that’s the place where they have free muffins and coffee!).

And while we’re on the subject of making people feel welcome, let’s talk about parking. What better way to make a visitor feel welcome than having a space close to the church where they can park? So, if you’re a regular here at Southland, consider parking in one of the outer lots. We know they’re far away, but we’ll be running shuttles during each service. Who knows, it might be a great chance to meet some people in your Church family that you’ve never talked with before!

So, invite your friends and get ready to come celebrate a God that loves us so much that He sent His own Son so we could have life! We can’t wait for you and your families to come out and celebrate this amazing weekend with us.

Start With Your Marriage

During our DNA of a Dangerous Church series, you’ve probably heard Jon talking about the “Expressions” that will define our church—every Jesus follower at every campus. And Expression #2 says that “We will sacrificially serve our families.” For a lot of us, “sacrificially serving our families” will start with a healthy marriage. That’s why we’re offering our Wellspring Marriage experience again! We’ve hosted this experience four times in the past two years and watched Southland couples grow tremendously, whether they were already in a great place or needed a little relational CPR.

Here’s a glimpse at the kind of things you’ll learn at Wellspring:

  • Everyone is wired to think and act a certain way. That’s called personality. We’ll take a look at how understanding individual personalities can make your marriage stronger.
  • You’ll learn about conflict resolution...including who should always win in an argument!
  • We’ll speak frankly on sexual intimacy and on the importance of “dating” even after you’re married.
  • You’ll be able to ask our teachers any questions you want about marriage and get honest answers. We’re an open book!
  • You’ll get to hang out with other married couples, make some a new friends, and enjoy some good food together.

We know you want to come. And we want you to come! Tell you what, we’ll even watch your kids for you. That’s right—childcare is provided (up to 12 years old). We'll just need a heads up that they’ll be coming! So, if you’re interested in attending Wellspring, please complete the online registration. The cost is $30 per couple, which will cover materials and breakfast/lunch (please be prepared to pay online when you begin the registration form). The class will be held on Saturday, April 28th 2012 from 8:30am-3:30pm in Building B. If you have any questions, contact Stephanie.

Calling an Audible

In case you're not a sports fan (or a red-blooded American), we wanted to let you know that the Super Bowl is coming up on February 5. It's the biggest day of the year for both football and television commercial fans alike. What does this mean to you? Well, if you're an avid 6:08 attender, you'll want to know that we're tweaking the service time by three hours. That's right. On February 5, 6:08 is going to be at 3:08pm. We want to make sure that you still have the opportunity to hit up church, make your world famous buffalo chicken dip and make it to your Super Bowl parties on time.

Other than the time change, that's all you need to know! It'll be a regular 6:08 service, just at a different time.

The Production Team Needs You!

There may be no “I” in team but there is definitely a “U” in volunteering! Ok, so that’s a little cheesy. Ok, it’s really cheesy but that doesn’t make it any less true. In fact, I’m very thankful for that cheesy truth because for me it means getting the opportunity to serve with some of the most amazing people on the planet. And I want to invite you to join us!

Did you know that each weekend over 10,000 people experience Southland’s weekend service? From the second you walk through the doors, download the podcast or catch the television broadcast you are affected by our Production Team. Without them there would be no sights, no sounds. When Jon says “check this out,” all you’d see is a big blank screen. The band would look like a group of mimes. We could not make the weekend service happen without our amazing volunteers…nor would we want to!

That’s why our Production Team is looking for people who are interested in finding ways to serve during the weekend services. Now, you may be saying to yourself, “That’s a great idea. Someone with experience should definitely volunteer with the production team.” And you’re right, they should. But, so should you! Experience is great but not necessary. We’ll do all the training we just need your willingness to serve.

Below is a list of each position on our team as well as descriptions of what each position does. Even if you’re only slightly interested I’d love to talk with you! You can email me or call me at (859) 224-1651.

I look forward to serving with you soon!

Sarah HopkinsWeekend Volunteer Coordinator

Camera Operator:
The role of the camera operator is to support the worship and teaching experience by operating a professional production video camera during the weekend service. The camera operator works closely with the director to enhance the overall stage production through the use of video. The camera operator also supports the filming of the Southland Hour, our weekly TV show, and our online sermon videos.

Graphics Operator:
The role of the graphics operator is to support the worship and teaching experience by operating a computer based graphics machine to display song lyrics and any message based slides. The graphics operator works closely with the assistant director and director to display images in the appropriate time and place within the service to most effectively support the overall message of the service.

Assistant Director:
The role of the assistant director is to support the worship and teaching experience by serving as the "gate-keeper" for the control room. The assistant director works closely with the director and producer to coordinate the flow of the service and also works with the graphics operator to know what is coming and where the production is going next.

Lighting Operator:
The role of the lighting operator is to support the worship and teaching experience by operating the lighting console to playback lighting cues for weekend services. The lighting operator works closely with the producer to help craft the look and feel of the weekend service. An appreciation for music is also a benefit to the lighting operator as they work with the musicians to support the overall message of the service.

Broadcast Recording Engineer:
The role of the broadcast recording engineer each weekend is to record the individual instruments, vocalists and speakers so that they may be mixed down later for playback on television, web streaming, and DVD.

Monitor Audio Engineer:
The role of the monitor audio engineer is to support the worship experience by creating a personalized musical mix for each member of the worship team. The engineer works closely with the worship leaders, band directors and individual musicians and vocalists to be sure they can clearly hear each other and communicate effectively. Monitor engineers also attend the band rehearsal during the week prior to serving.

Stage Manager:
The role of the stage manager is to be the eyes and ears of the production team backstage. They are responsible for making sure everyone involved with the weekend service is where they need to be when they need to be there. An ability to multitask and communicate is key for this role.

Be the Church.

Instead of coming to church on Sunday, let’s go out and be the Church this Christmas. We’re challenging you to spend some of your time on Christmas day to do something amazing. Here’s a list of ideas, but don’t let them limit you. Feel free to allow God to speak to you and come up with your own thing. We’re excited to see how you’ll let God use you.

  • Visit a local hospital with cards, small gifts or cookies to give to patients, nurses and doctors who can’t be home for Christmas.
  • Invite neighbors and friends without family in town, to spend the day with your family (don’t assume someone else has asked them).
  • Write a letter of encouragement to people in prison and those serving in our military.
  • Have a designated family prayer time and pray for our country, state, city, church, those that don’t know Jesus and missionaries.
  • Buy some snacks or prepare a meal and deliver it to people in a hospital waiting room or a homeless shelter.
  • Do a family “work project” at a social agency, school yard, cemetery, park or church.
  • Purchase some socks, toiletries or bus tokens and donate them to a local homeless shelter.
  • Take a meal or some desserts to a police or fire station to show how much we appreciate their service.
  • Prayer walk through your neighborhood or a nearyby college campus or school.
  • Call the Salvation Army and offer to assist them with any needs they may have.
  • Visit a neighbor you’ve been meaning to meet or wanting to befriend.
  • Gather with friends and family to go Christmas caroling at a hospital, police station, fire station or nursing home.
  • Go to the Airport and hand out gift cards to the airport and rental car employees. Welcome those traveling with signs and treats.
  • Serve a meal at The Hope Center, Lighthouse Ministries, Catholic Action Center. It would be a good idea to call before you go.
  • At Christmas weekend services we'll have Communion sets you can take with you to someone who can't get out on Christmas. When you attend, be sure to pick a set up on your way out.

If you don't see anything here that speaks to you, by all means, pray and ask God what you can do.

A Home for the Holiday

Your opportunity to be the church this holiday season starts now! Each Tuesday and Saturday evening, the Room in the Inn homeless sheltering program needs overnight hosts each week to spend the night on Southland's property. Hosts are asked to arrive between around 7, stay overnight, set up breakfast for our guests and oversee cleanup. To volunteer, you must be a man 18 years or older.

Join the team just through the holidays or stay on through the rest of the season. Help make someone's holiday brighter (and your's too!) by volunteering on December 24, 27 and January 3.

If you are interested in serving, contact Tanya.

Help Winterize the Community Garden!

A church member has donated a dumptruck load of compost for our garden to help us winterize! We have a dump trailer and truck but are in need of volunteers to help us shovel, load and unload the compost. Grab some friends and come on out at 10am, THIS SATURDAY, December 10.  If you can help, please contact the Garden Team Leader, Craig Schuster at schumaan@aol.com or call at (859) 396-6719, weather permitting.
